Whether you’re writing up your resume for the first time or sprucing it up for a job advancement or change in career, your resume can be a headache. It’s easy to get caught up in the big details and forget the little ones. So here’s a list of 7 common mistakes and how to avoid them!
1 – Over Generalization.
Yes, employers do need to know what you’ve done, but there’s a middle ground that needs to be had. Rather than saying that you provide great service, mention that you were recognized by corporate for your outstanding customer-employee relationship skills.
2 – One Size Does Not Fit All.
You shouldn’t send out a cookie-cutter resume with a list of jobs you’ve done. Tailor your resume to the company you’re sending it to, mentioning specifically how your past experience will apply to their company. ‘Cleaning dishes’ might not apply to an office job, but ‘working in a fast-paced environment under pressure’ does!
3 – Contact Information.
Even if you come highly recommended and have the perfect resume and work experience, it won’t matter if you’ve listed out the wrong contact information. Always be sure to double check everything – including your own phone number! Also, be sure to check with your references beforehand to make sure that you have their most up-to-date information. (Also, give them a heads up that you’re using them as a reference and tell them what the job you’re going for is, so they can give you a great review!)
4 – Boring Objectives.
Don’t just say that you’re seeking a challenge and wanting growth, work your worth and wants into your objective. Make sure that your potential employer knows that you bring value to the table, too.
5 – Visually Unpleasing.
True, everyone is different, but there are some universal dislikes. If your resume is a block of text and conglomeration of fonts, employers likely won’t finish reading it. Show yours to family and friends before you submit it to get outside opinions and adjust your resume accordingly.
6 – Accomplishments VS Duties.
It’s easy to just list out all of the job duties you’ve held. Show your ambition with your duties and turn them into accomplishments. For example, rather than ‘Updated files’, try ‘organized years’ worth of files to be more manageable for all departments’.
7 – Grammatical Errors and Typos!
