If you are taking care of someone who is in a wheelchair, you might be getting by with the current vehicle that you drive. It might have been working for some time, but there are signs coming up that are pushing you to purchase a wheelchair van. Wheelchair vans are specifically made to help you roll someone up into the van who is unable to walk themselves. These vans, though expensive, can be one of the most beneficial things in a disabled person’s life.

You’re No Longer Able to Help Your Partner Into Your Car
If you are experiencing a lot of pain and fatigue from moving the disabled person in and out of the car and putting them into their wheelchair, it’s time to look into buying a van specifically for this reason. The problem that many caretakers have is that by helping other people, they put themselves in a bad situation health-wise. It’s not uncommon for many caretakers to have back and bone problems because of constantly lifting and moving other people.

They Are Unable to Move Themselves
If the disabled person was once able to move themselves from the wheelchair into the car and back but is now having problems, a wheelchair van can be incredibly beneficial. There are two reasons why this might happen. The person who is in a wheelchair might be getting older or has a disease that is progressing, preventing them from having the strength to lift themselves up and into a car from their seat. If you go out frequently, this could exhaust them even more.

It’s Time to Be More Independent
Many disabled people don’t go out very often other than to the doctor because it’s too much of a hassle for them to get in and out of a car. This hinders their freedom and independence, and it might even cause you to be home bound if you choose to stay with them to take care of their needs. The wheelchair van lets your loved one move about freely without the worry that they have to get in and out of a low vehicle.

Wheelchair vans are used for many people who have disabilities, and they can be incredibly advantageous when encouraging someone who is disabled to be more independent and experience things they might not have had the strength to do before. There are many insurance companies that are willing to cover most or all of the expenses involved with buying one of these vans, and you could also consider purchasing a used vehicle to save money as well. Be sure to do your research on how to properly use and drive one of these vehicles before purchasing.
